Byetta Warning!

Published: November 2, 2009

Patients and doctors should be aware of possible kidney function problems with Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceuticals’ Byetta diabetes drug, federal health regulators said. The Food and Drug Administration received 78 reports of problems with kidney function in patients using Byetta from April 2005 through October 2008. Nearly seven million prescriptions for the drug were written during roughly the same period, so the agency noted the number of kidney problems represented a “small percentage” of the total number of patients on the drug. Low Blood Sugar During Exercise? Do this!

If you have diabetes and starting a new exercise program, its imperative that you carry at least 15 grams of a fast-acting carbohydrates with you at all times in case of hypoglycemia while exercising. Even better - ask if you can keep one of the choices below in the fridge at the fitness center (its in the gyms best interest to do so). Below are quick energy choices that can relieve the symptoms:
  • Nondiet soda- ½ to ¾ cup
  • Fruit juice- ½ cup
  • Fruit- 2 tablespoons of raisins
  • Milk- 1 cup
  • Candy- 5 Lifesavers
  • Glucose tablets- 3 tablets (5 grams each)
My clients find the Glucose tablets work best and easy to keep around.
